Block E Political Considerations

  1. Many scientists argue that the rainforest ecosystem should be considered a trust of humanity, similar to the status of Antarctica and the oceans. Does this sentiment conflict with our notion of national sovereignty? In other words, who should control the Amazon rainforest?
  2. In consideration that some nation's carbon emissions are significantly higher than Brazil's, i.e. Brazil's is roughly 9% per capita of the US (2004), do they have a right to protest Brazil's policies? Defend your answer.
  3. Do nations other than Brazil have a hand in the destruction of the rainforest? (Research your answer. Be sure to cite your source(s))
  4. What role, if any, should developed nations take in addressing this issue? Defend your answer
(This is a minor project grade. It is out of 15 marks: 3 for each answer, 3 for responding to another student's response in your class). A student can only have one other student response. That is one student will have - guaranteed - only one other student respond to their answers.
